R.V. Paul Chan, MD, MSc, MBA is the Department Head and the John H. Panton, MD Professor of Ophthalmology at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He is the Co-Director of the Vitreoretinal Fellowship and serves as Director of the Pediatric Retina and Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Service. His clinical practice focuses on vitreoretinal surgery, with an expertise in pediatric retinal disease. Dr. Chan received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania, MD from the Temple University School of Medicine, MSc from Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC), and MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. After completing Ophthalmology residency at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital of WCMC, he went on to a Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chan spent nine years on faculty at WCMC, as Director of the Retina Service and Vitreoretinal Fellowship, before moving to UIC.
Dr. Chan is a global leader in pediatric blindness prevention and ROP. His primary research interests focus on utilizing new technology and imaging techniques to better evaluate and manage children with retinal disease. He has authored over 170 peer reviewed articles and has received grant funding by the NIH, the NSF, and a number of charitable foundations. He is a core team member of the Imaging and Informatics for ROP (i-ROP) consortium and leads the Global Education Network for ROP (GEN-ROP).Together, they have developed artificial intelligence, tele-education and telemedicine programs, and have established clinical, teaching, and research collaborations in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Dr. Chan also serves as a consultant for programs sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Orbis International, and Helen Keller International (HKI).
Dr. Chan has been very actively involved in academic ophthalmology and organized medicine. He serves on the Board of Trustees for HKI, the Board of Trustees for Prevent Blindness America, the Executive Committee for the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO), and the Committee of Secretaries for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), where he is the Secretary for Global Alliances. Dr. Chan is an assistant editor for the journal, Retina, and is on the editorial board for Retina Today, Ocular Surgery News, the Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology, and the Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases. He is an active member in a number of ophthalmic societies, including the American Ophthalmological Society, the Club Jules Gonin, the Retina Society, the Macula Society, founding member of the Vit-Buckle Society, the Association of Pediatric Retina Surgeons, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and he is Past President of the Chinese American Ophthalmological Society and Past President of the American Eye Study Club.

Youxin Chen, M.D presently the director and professor of the Department of Ophthalmology, Peking Union Medical College in Beijing. He is the president of Beijing Ophthalmologist Association, the President of the Macular disease Society of the Cross-Strait Medicine Exchange Association, former vice-president of Chinese Ophthalmologist Association and editorial board member of several Ophthalmic journal, such as Chinese journal of Ophthalmology, BMC Ophthalmology, APJO.
He graduated from Third Military Medical University in 1986, and earned his a PhD from Peking Union Medical College in 1996. He finished his residency training and fellowship training in Peking Union Medical College Hospital. He also spent 2 years undertaking postdoctoral research at Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California. In his practice, He pioneered the clinical application of Indocyanine green choroidal angiography, Photodynamic therapy and anti-VEGF therapy in China. Dr. Chen has been actively engaged in scientific research and clinical trials as well. Dr. Chen conducted international multicenter clinical trials “Brilliance Study” and “VIVID EAST Study” as the leading principal investigator. He has published more than over 100 articles in domestic and international journals. For his efforts to promote the development of ophthalmology in China and also in Asia-Pacific region, Distinguished Service Award was presented to him in 2008 and the Achievement award were presented in 2016 and 2018. He also awarded as Distinguished Leadership Award by Chinese Oversea Ophthalmic and Vision Science Association.

Professor Gemmy Cheung is currently Professor, Duke-NUS Medical School, National University of Singapore, and Head of the Medical Retina Department, Singapore National Eye Center. She also heads the Retina Research Group at the Singapore Eye Research Institute. Her research focus on Asian retinal diseases, specifically age-related macular degeneration (AMD), polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and myopic macular degeneration. She has published >200 peer-reviewed articles, and >10 book chapters, and has completed several clinical trials in anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapies in the capacity of principle investigator. She is a council member of the Asia-pacific vitreoretinal society and serves on the Editorial boards of several journals, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Retina and Eye.
Prof Cheung has received a number of prestigious awards, including the AAO Secretariat Award, the AAO Achievement award, the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Award, the APAO Nakajima Award, the Macula Society Young Investigator Award and the Asia-pacific vitreoretinal society Constable lecture award.

K. Bailey Freund, MD specializes in all retinal disorders including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular diseases. He is an expert in retinal imaging and diagnostically challenging and rare conditions. For those reasons, he routinely evaluates patients and images from around the world. Dr. Freund has initiated and conducted many clinical trials for treatments for retinal diseases. He is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and a Senior Partner at Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York, a single-specialty group with eleven retinal physicians. Dr. Freund is a founding member and trustee of the International Retinal Imaging Society. He is also a member of the Retina Society, Macula Society, and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is on the Editorial Board of the journal Retina and is an Associate Editor for Retinal Cases & Brief Reports. He has authored over 500 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and has written numerous books and book chapters, most notably the second edition of The Retinal Atlas. He recently joined the editorial team for Ryan’s Retina 7th edition. Dr. Freund has received numerous awards including the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the Macula Society, the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the J. Donald M. Gass Lectureship at the Retina Society. He is a graduate of Williams College and the New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency training in general ophthalmology and fellowship in medical and surgical retina at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. Dr. Freund is also a prominent collector of vintage magic apparatus and a proud husband and father of two.

Jose; Garcia-Arumi is full Professor of Ophthalmology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) since September 2007 and Professor and founding member of the European School of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO). In addition, he is Charmain of Ophthalmology and coordinator of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Hospital Vall d'Hebron since September 1998. He also helds the position of Director of the Biomedical Research Unit of Ophthalmology at the same hospital since 2008. He is also president of the Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous (SERV).
Dr Garcia-Arumi is a specialist in surgical retina, with special interest in complex vitreoretinal surgery, myopic traction maculopathy and macular hole treatment.
His professional activity has also developed in the area of research, both in the clinical field and in basic research. Historically, his activity has mainly focused on clinical trials, participating in more than fifty clinical trials in most of which he has acted as principal investigator. Since 2008, his research activity has become increasingly basic, establishing the Ophthalmology Laboratory at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute and leading several projects in the field of gene therapy, new drug development and cell therapy. Most of the projects have been funded by public entities through competitive grants, the most representative being Instituto de Salud Carlos III and Fundacon Maraton de TV3.
Since the beginning of Oftared (an ophthalmological collaborative network), he is Coordinator of the Hospital Vall d’Hebron, being the PI in several phase I, II and III clinical trials with intravitreal drugs. During his long career in research and teaching, he has supervised 56 doctoral theses and 30 research projects.
Nowadays, he participates annually as a speaker and moderator in conferences organised by the European Ophthalmological Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Euretina Society, the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOK), etc.

Allen C. Ho MD, FACS is Attending Surgeon and Director of Retina Research of Wills Eye Hospital and Professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University. He maintains special interests in macular diseases, diabetic retinopathy, surgical retinal diseases and clinical trials investigating new treatments for vitreoretinal diseases including gene and cell therapies and new surgical drug delivery devices and techniques. His experience includes collaborative translational and clinical trial clinical research with expertise in study design, methodological testing, data analyses, surgical instrumentation and procedure development, execution and communication of these studies and their study results. He is the recent President of The Retina Society.
Through the Wills Eye Hospital Retina Fellowship he has mentored over 60 retina fellows and international research trainees. He has been Study Chair, Steering Committee Member or Principal Investigator of over 50 clinical trials. Dr. Ho has served on the US FDA Ophthalmic Device Panel, AAO Ophthalmic Retina Technology Assessment Committee, AAO Retina Measures Group, AAO IRIS Registry Committee and is past Chair of the AAO Retina Subspecialty Days and Vail Vitrectomy meetings. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Retina Society and the board of the American Diabetes Association of Greater Philadelphia. Dr. Ho has authored over 250 peer reviewed publications and several textbooks and is Editor-in-Chief of Current Opinion in Ophthalmology and Chief Medical Editor of Retina Today. He is a perennial awardee of national and regional Top Doctors awards and has been named to The Ophthalmologist Power 100 most influential eye specialists in the world on multiple occasions, most recently 2020.

Dr. Hwang was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He clinically specializes in uveitis and retinal diseases and is currently an attending staff in department of ophthalmology of the Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH), he is also an associate professor of Ophthalmology in the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.
Dr. Hwang has visited the Kyorin University Hospital, the University of Tokyo Hospital, and the Francs I. Proctor Foundation of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) as an international postdoctoral scholar and clinical observer. Dr. Hwang is a doctor of philosophy in Public Health and Epidemiology. He has published many peer - reviewed articles. He is the uveitis sectional editor of the Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology and has served as the scientific reviewer for more than 20 international journals. His research topics focus on uveitis, retinal diseases, ophthalmic epidemiology, big-data analysis, and artificial intelligence.

Pearse Keane is Professor of Artificial Medical Intelligence at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He is originally from Ireland and received his medical degree from University College Dublin (UCD), graduating in 2002.
In 2016, he initiated a formal collaboration between Moorfields Eye Hospital and Google DeepMind, with the aim of developing artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for the earlier detection and treatment of retinal disease. In August 2018, the first results of this collaboration were published in the journal, Nature Medicine. In May 2020, he jointly led work, again published in Nature Medicine, to develop an early warning system for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), by far the commonest cause of blindness in many countries.
In October 2019, he was included on the Evening Standard Progress1000 list of most influential Londoners (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/the1000) and in June 2020, he was profiled in The Economist (https://www.economist.com/technology-quarterly/2020/06/11/the-potential-and-the-pitfalls-of-medical-ai).

He graduated from Seoul National University Medical College (MD), and Seoul National University School of Medicine (PhD). He completed his residency in Seoul National University Hospital, and then a research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Institute, USA.
His main area of clinical research is retinal imaging, and he has authored 120 peer-reviewed publications, including Ophthalmology, AJO, BJO, Retina, IOVS, etc.
He is an active member of several prominent international retinal societies including, ASRS, The Retina Society, and The Macula Society.

Dr. Kokame received his M.D. from the UCLA School of Medicine with honors in Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed ophthalmology residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute/UCLA, and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, rate the #1 ophthalmology program in the United States for the past 20 years. He is Chief of Ophthalmology and Clinical Professor at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine. He is founder and director of The Hawaii Macula and Retina Institute and The Retina Center at Pali Momi affiliated with Hawaii Pacific Health since 1993 with over 100 publications and over 60 national or international clinical trials. He was the first to do the bionic eye surgery in the Asia Pacific region in March of 2015. He received his business degree in organizational development (Master of Medical Management) from the USC Marshall School of Business. His sabattical was at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London in 2000 with Professors Alan Bird and Zdenek Gregor.
Dr. Kokame is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Honor Award - 1999, Secretariat Award - 2008, Senior Achievement Award –2014), Macula Society (Gass Medal 2021), Retina Society, and American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) (Honor Award – 2001; Senior Honor Award –2003). He was admitted to the prestigious American Ophthalmological Society in 2015 after acceptance of his thesis on treatment and multimodality diagnostic testing polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy.
Dr. Kokame’s chief research interests are macular hole surgery, management of surgical complications of cataract surgery, exudative macular degeneration, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, new pharmacologic development in retinal diseases, and the newest imaging techniques for macular disease. He has published over 100 papers, delivered over 200 lectures throughout the USA, Asia, Europe and the Middle East with over 100 invited lectures.

Tamer Mahmoud, MD, PhD joined Associated Retinal Consultants/Beaumont hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan in September 2017 and is a professor of Ophthalmology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. He moved from North Carolina where he was the program director of the vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Duke University Eye center and a tenured associate professor at Duke. He has developed many surgical techniques including the use of subretinal air to displace submacular hemorrhage and developed and performed the first human autologous retinal transplantation. He also introduced chandelier buckles to the United States and developed the ILM retracting door technique for macular holes. In 2019, he developed the Nanovitreoretinal Surgery Platform. In 2021, he described the inaccurate measurement that confound the study of myopic macular holes.
Dr. Mahmoud graduated Valedictorian from Ainshams University, finished his internship, residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at the Duke University Eye Center. He received the Edward K. Isbey, Jr., M.D. Resident Award for "Excellence in Clinical Care, Ethics, and Research" from the Duke Eye Center, the Retina Research Foundation/"Joseph M. and Eula C. Lawrence" award from ARVO, the "Senior Honor Award" from the American Society of Retina Specialists, The “Achievement Award” from the AAO, the prestigious Robert A. Machemer research award from the Duke Eye Center, the "Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award" from the Kresge Eye Institute and the “Golden Globe Award” for residents’ education from the Duke Eye Center.
Dr. Mahmoud has been on the list of Best Doctors in America since 2009 and Castle Connolly Top Doctors in Ophthalmology. He was the program director of the Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at the Kresge Eye Institute in Michigan before moving back to Duke in 2011 to join the retina faculty. Wayne State University-Kresge Eye Institute established the "Tamer H. Mahmoud, MD endowed fellowship research award" in 2012. This award is bestowed yearly to the fellow presenting the best paper.

He is a recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Service Award of APAO in 2007, Achievement award of APAO in 2012, American Academy’s Achievement award 2009 as well as AAO ‘s International Ophthalmologist Education Award in 2011 and the AAO Senior Achievement Award in 2018 He has a keen interest in making surgical videos and has received the prestigious Rhett Buckler award for best video at the annual meeting of ASRS (6 times) 2009 New York, 2010 Vancouver ,2011 Boston followed by Las Vegas, 2012, Toronto, 2013 and Seattle, 2020. He received the Best video award at the film festival held at the 25th APAO meet held at Beijing, China, Sept 2010 and the Best of Show at the annual AAO meeting held at New Orleans in Oct 2013. He is also the recipient of the Honor award @ 2013 and the Senior Honor award @ 2014 for outstanding contribution to the American society of Retinal Surgeons (ASRS). He has been conferred the Fellow of ASRS (FASRS) on its inception in June 2021. He is also the receipient of the (Indian journal of Ophthalmology) IJO Gold award for 2014. He has numerous peer reviewed articles to his credit along with numerous chapters in various international books. He is a regular reviewer with ophthalmology journals such as RETINA, American Journal of Opthalmology (AJO), EYE, European journal of Ophthalmology and IJO. He is a member of the Program Committee for The Prestigious Vail Vitrectomy meeting held in 2016 and 2019. Dr. Kyu Hyung Park had his medical degree at College of medicine, Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. He completed an internship and residency in ophthalmology at Seoul National University Hospital. He had his PhD at Seoul National University and also completed his post-Doc fellowship at Mayo clinic, USA. He is one of the leading specialists in medical and surgical retina, ocular genetic epidemiology in Korea. He published over 250 papers in peer-reviewed SCI journals. He serves as principal investigator on several clinical trials for age related macular degeneration, Diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion. He was a secretary general of Korean Ophthalmology Society and Korean Retina Society. He is currently serve as director of ocular epidemiology committee of Korean Ophthalmology Society and active member of Korean retinal society, ARVO, ASRS, the RETINA society, etc.
Nowadays, he focused on the medical and surgical management of patient with many retinal diseases including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment. He also is trying to do clinical and translational research toward developing new diagnostic tools and therapies for angiogenesis related retinal diseases including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He also has been collecting genetic, proteomic and epidemiologic data on age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, central serous chorioretinopathy and analyze genetic and proteomic profiles of Korean to elucidate the genetic marker and potential biomarker of these diseases.

Kourous A. Rezaei, M.D., is an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of medical and surgical vitreoretinal diseases. He is associate professor of ophthalmology and director of vitreoretinal fellowship at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Rezaei is a senior partner at the Illinois Retina Associates in Chicago. He is the founder of ChannelR (www.channelr.net) and course director of RETINAWS and Formula Retina. Dr. Rezaei is a distinguished inductee of the Retina Hall of Fame and is listed in the Illinois Top Doctors. Dr. Paisan Ruamviboonsuk is a Clinical Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, College of Medicine, Rangsit University, Bangkok, Thailand. He is the Assistant Hospital Director for Centers of Medical Excellence of Rajavithi Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand.
He is the Vice-President of Asia-Pacific Teleophthalmology Society, the Scientific Secretary of Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society, and a Council Member of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and Asia-Pacific Ocular Imaging Society.
He was the President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand in 2013-2016 and the President of the Thai Retina Society in 2011-2014.
He received several distinguished national awards, such as the National Distinguished Public Health Officer Award for Academic Achievement from His Majesty the King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand, and international awards, such as Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Arthur Lim Award lecturer, American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, and United Nations Public Service Award for the initiative on prevention of diabetic blindness using retinal photography.
His recent published works are on artificial intelligence for diabetic retinopathy screening and imaging of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy.

Ricarda Schumann, MD, is Associated Professor of Ophthalmology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany.
After completing her studies at the University of Leipzig, Germany, the Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA, the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany, she earned her MD degree in Ophthalmology from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich with a thesis on ‘Comparison of conventional preparation and cryopreservation techniques of epiretinal membranes in electron microscopy’ in 2004. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the University Eye Hospital of Ludwig-Maximilians-University (Chief: Professor Anselm Kampik) in 2012. Her thesis named ‘Epiretinal membranes in retinal surgery” was published in 2013. Since that time, Ricarda Schumann holds full activity in student and residence teaching at the University Eye Hospital Munich.
Her main topics are Medical and Surgical Retina (traction maculopathies, retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, diabetic retinopathy) and other intraocular surgery (cataract, trauma). Since 2013 Ricarda Schumann was Head of the Laboratory of Vitreoretinal Pathology and the Research Group of Electron Microscopy in Munich. Since 2016, she is an active examiner of the European Board of Ophthalmology.
Doctor Schumann has contributed to more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book chapters published mainly in the areas of surgical retina (macular hole, macular pucker, vitreomacular traction, retinal detachment) and histopathology of the vitreomacular interface. Her current main area of both clinical and laboratory research is focusing on the diagnosis (imaging) and treatment of vitreomacular interface diseases, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and on the pathogenesis of traction maculopathies. Doctor Schumann is a member of the Germany Society of Ophthalmology (DOG), the German Retina Society, the German Society of Ophthalmic Surgery (DOC), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and the European Association of Retinal Specialists (EURETINA).

Dr Shwu-Jiuan Sheu graduated from Kaohsiung Medical University in 1984. She completed her residency and proceeded to attain fellowships in ophthalmology at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan, in 1989 and the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California, USA, in 1992. She served as chairperson of Ophthalmology at the Kaohsiung Veterans Hospital (1995-2016) and president of Taiwan Retinal Society (2014-2015).
Professor Sheu is currently director and professor of ophthalmology at Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan. She is also serving as president of Taiwan Ocular Inflammation Society since 2021. Professor Sheu is a well- known retinal surgeon in Asia-Pacific and globally recognized for her research in clinical and bench to bed-site. She published extensively on vitreoretinal disease, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, drug delivery in uveitis and basic and translational research.

Dr. Jay Sridhar serves on the full-time faculty on the Retina service of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the rank of Associate Professor. Dr. Sridhar has earned several honors including induction into the Retina Society, the Senior Achievement Award from the American Society of Retinal Specialists (ASRS), and the Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). He also is host of the top ophthalmology podcast "Straight From The Cutter's Mouth: A Retina Podcast" which is co-hosted by the AAO and ASRS.

Giovanni Staurenghi is currently professor of ophthalmology, chair of the University Eye Clinic and director of the University Eye Clinic Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences “Luigi Sacco” at Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan, Italy. He was awarded his degree at the University of Pavia, Italy, in 1986, and completed his residency at the University of Milan in 1990. He was a research fellow at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, from 1991 to 1992 and visiting scientist at the same institute from 1992 to 1993. He became associate professor in 1999 and was promoted to full professor in 2007.
Professor Staurenghi’s research, publications and lectures have an important bearing on retinal diseases; in particular, his work is focused on different types of imaging and treatment.
Professor Staurenghi is silver fellow of ARVO, fellow of European Board of Ophtahlmology and Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was a scientific advisor of the Digital Angiography Reading Center and visiting professor and consultant for the Belfast Ophthalmic Reading Center at the Central Angiographic Resource Facility. He was awarded with the Coscas medal and give name lectures such as Junius Kuhnt lecture and the Heinrich Müller lecture. He has been a member of ARVO since 1988, the Macula Society since 2004, the Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society since 2006, and the AAO since 2007. He was part of the Annual Meeting Program Committee for ARVO from 2008 to 2010.
He is or was also a member of the editorial board of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Retina, American Journal of Retinal Cases, and acts as a reviewer for many international scientific journals. He is organizing with Prof SriniVas Sadda the Classification of Atrophy Meeting to study the macular atrophy in different diseases (CAM). He is a member of the Consensus on Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Nomenclature Study Group (CONAN).

Lejla Vajzovic, MD, FASRS has established an international reputation as a leader in vitreoretinal surgery, research, and teaching. She is an ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon with expertise in complex adult and pediatric retinal diseases and surgery. She is interested in cutting edge technologies and recovery of vision in hereditary and common retinal diseases with gene-therapy, stem cell technology and retinal implants. She is a co-director of the Duke Pediatric Retina and Optic Nerve Center, and she directs the Duke Center for Artificial and Regenerative Vision, where performs gene-therapy delivery and she implants the Argus II “bionic eye” to restore vision to individuals with total blindness. An influential educator, she organizes and directs several highly successful national and international courses, including the first-of-its-kind Advances in Pediatric Retina Course at Duke and the international Duke Fellows Advances in Vitreous Surgery Course. She is director of prestigious Duke Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship and director of Duke Eye Center’s Continuing Medical Education program. She has received numerous prestigious honors and awards for excellence in clinical care, research, leadership and education the field of ophthalmology: the Duke Medical Alumni Association's Emerging Leader Award, the Women in Ophthalmology Emerging Leader Award, the Retina Society Fellowship Research Award, the Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship Award and the Society of Heed Fellows Award, the Knights Templar Eye Foundation Career Starter Research Award, the PDC’s Enhanced Academics in a Basic Laboratory Environment (ENABLE) Career Development Program Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, the American Society of Retinal Specialists Senior Honor Award and the Film Festival: Rhett Buckler Award.
