Tokyo Medical and Dental University
Kyoko Ohno-Matsui is Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU). She is also the Chief of the Advanced Clinical Center for Myopia at TMDU. She graduated from Yokohama City University Medical School and received her PhD at TMDU. She did postdoctoral fellowship at Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Her research mainly focuses myopia, especially pathologic myopia. Based on the long-term progression study, she established international photographic classification of myopic maculopathy. She is especially interested in how eye is deformed in pathologic myopia, and then how eye deformity damages retina and optic nerve. As a method to visualize the shape of the entire globe, she established a new technique called ‘3D MRI of the eye’. Based on 3D MRI and wide-field fundus imaging, she proposed a novel classification of posterior staphyloma. Using various imaging modalities (especially swept-source OCT), she has been detecting structural abnormalities which occur in various tissues in eyes with pathologic myopia. She has also been actively working on ultra-wide field OCT imaging to visualize the entire extent of staphyloma in many patients in vivo. She has authored or co-authored 309 manuscripts which were published in peer-reviewed journals. She is the active member of The Macular Society, The The Retina Society, and Club Jules Gonin. She has been awarded The J. Donald Gass Medal at the Macula Society in 2022. She has delivered Gabriel Coscas lecture in 2021, Stanley Chang lecture in 2022, and Chew Sek Jin lecture in 2023. She has been awarded The Jose Rizal Medal at APAO in 2023.

Tsutomu Yasukawa
Tsutomu Yasukawa
Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medical Sciences
Tsutomu Yasukawa, MD, PhD graduated from Kyoto University School of Medicine in 1993 and received his doctoral degree from Kyoto University Graduate School of Medical Sciences in 2000 on the research topic of intraocular drug delivery systems. In 2000-2004, he was a guest research fellow with a scholarship of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at University Eye Hospital Leipzig in Germany. He developed a rabbit lipofuscin accumulation model and 3-dimentional spheroidal culture system of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Since 2005, he works for Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medical Science and became Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology and Visual Science in 2021. Dr. Yasukawa is interested in the development of drug delivery systems, especially controlled release of bioactive proteins (e.g.: anti-VEGF agents). He is also interested in lipid metabolism of retinal pigment epithelium, which may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration. More recently, he invented a novel method to produce epithelial cell sheet with self-producing Bruch’s membrane-like structure, which may be available for regenerative medicine.
