Retinology has been making rapid progress in recent years. Reports on molecular drugs, gene therapy, clinical application of regenerative medicine, new surgical methods, etc. are being made every week and are being introduced into the clinical field. This information used to be obtained from papers, but now it is available from all over the world through the Internet, and it is all around us. However, the information is a mixed bag and cannot be trusted as is. In order to examine the authenticity of information, it is necessary for researchers to exchange opinions directly with each other, or with researchers and doctors. Unfortunately, there is a limit to the number of web-based meetings that can be used for this purpose.

On the other hand, since information nowadays immediately crosses borders, it is insufficient to exchange opinions only within Japan. Overseas conferences are the best place to obtain the latest international and reliable information, but it is not easy for doctors and researchers practicing in Japan to participate in overseas conferences. Therefore, we decided to establish FujiRetina as a place to get the latest information and exchange opinions in Japan.

What is particularly important is not only to hear the opinions of world-class doctors and researchers, but also to be able to make them aware of information about Japan. No matter how excellent a researcher's research is, he or she may be hesitant to suddenly attend a meeting where top-class overseas researchers gather. I think that having leading researchers from abroad learn about Japan's excellent research will lower the barrier for Japanese researchers to spread their wings to the world. It is widely known that the Japanese soccer world, which had been in a slump, has made great progress with the cradle of the J-League. In the same way, it would be of great benefit to the development of retinology in Japan if Japanese retina specialists could get in touch with the world's information and transmit domestic information to the world while staying in Japan. In other words, I would like to make FujiRetina a cradle for the development of retinology in Japan like the J-League.

Although I have written some difficult things, I plan to introduce medical retinology, surgical retinology, and basic retinal science in an easy-to-understand manner, from the rudiments to the latest topics. We are looking forward to seeing you at FujiRetina.

網膜学は近年急速な進歩をとげつつあります。分子標的薬、遺伝子治療、再生医療の臨床応用、新しい手術法などの報告が毎週のようになされて、臨床領域に導入されつつあります。これらの情報は、以前は論文などから取得されていましたが、現在はインターネットを通じて世界中の情報が取得可能であり、我々の身の回りに溢れかえっています。ただし、それらは玉石混交でありそのまま信用することはできません。情報の真贋を吟味するためには、研究者同士あるいは研究者と医師が直接意見を交換する必要があります。そのための場としては、残念ながらWEB形式の会は限界があります。

一方、現在は情報が直ちに国境を越えるので、日本国内だけで意見交換しても不十分です。国際的かつ信頼できる最新の情報を得る場としては、海外の学会がベストですが、日本で診療をされている先生や研究者にとって、海外の学会に参加するのは簡単ではありません。そこで、日本で最新情報を得て意見交換をする場として、FujiRetinaという会を立ち上げることにしました。

特に重要なことは、世界一流の医師・研究者の意見を聞くだけではなく、彼らに日本の情報を知ってもらう事ができることです。研究者がいくら優れた研究をしていても、海外のトップクラスが集う会にいきなり参加するというのは躊躇されるのではないでしょうか。海外の有力な研究者に日本の優れた研究を知ってもらうのは、日本の研究者が世界に羽ばたくための障壁を低くしてくれると思います。低迷していた日本サッカー界が、J-リーグという揺籃の場を得て、大に発展したことは広く知られています。同じように、日本の網膜専門家が日本に居ながらにして世界の情報に触れ、国内の情報を世界に発信することは、日本の網膜学の発展にとって益することが大きいのではないでしょうか。つまり、FujiRetinaを、J-リーグのように日本の網膜学発展の揺籃の場にしたいと考えております。

何やら難しいことを書きましたが、内科的網膜学、外科的網膜学、基礎網膜分野などについて、初歩的なものから最新のものまでわかりやすく紹介する予定です。決して堅苦しい会にはなりませんので、一人でも多くの方にご参加いただきたいと思います。FujiRetinaへの御参加を、心よりお待ちしております。
