She completed her ophthalmology residency at the University Eye Hospital of Ludwig-Maximilians-University (Chief: Professor Anselm Kampik) in 2012. Her thesis named ‘Epiretinal membranes in retinal surgery” was published in 2013. Since that time, Ricarda Schumann holds full activity in student and residence teaching at the University Eye Hospital Munich.
Her main topics are Medical and Surgical Retina (traction maculopathies, retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, diabetic retinopathy) and other intraocular surgery (cataract, trauma). Since 2013 Ricarda Schumann was Head of the Laboratory of Vitreoretinal Pathology and the Research Group of Electron Microscopy in Munich. Since 2016, she is an active examiner of the European Board of Ophthalmology.
Doctor Schumann has contributed to more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book chapters published mainly in the areas of surgical retina (macular hole, macular pucker, vitreomacular traction, retinal detachment) and histopathology of the vitreomacular interface. Her current main area of both clinical and laboratory research is focusing on the diagnosis (imaging) and treatment of vitreomacular interface diseases, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and on the pathogenesis of traction maculopathies.
