Takayuki Baba, MD, is the Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine, Chiba, Japan. After graduating from Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 1997, he finished his residency in Ophthalmology in 1999. He received the JSPS Overseas Research Fellowship and became a research fellow at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, in 2007. After finishing the fellowship, he rejoined the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science of Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine. His subspeciality is vitreoretinal surgery, especially complicated retinal detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. His research interests include the surgical treatment of myopic macular complications and the development of treatment modalities for retinitis pigmentosa and other retinal degenerative diseases.

Dr. Satoko Fujimoto is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at The University of Osaka. She graduated from The University of Osaka and conducted research on retinal microstructure in high myopia under Dr. Yasushi Ikuno. She earned her PhD at the same institution with basic research on epithelial-mesenchymal transition in corneal epithelial cells. She subsequently completed a two-year research fellowship in retinal diseases under Dr. Gregg T. Kokame at University of Hawaii. Her current research focuses on imaging biomarkers and clinical outcomes in uveitis and retinal diseases.

Kaoru Fujinami, MD, PhD, is a clinical ophthalmologist and medical geneticist at the Laboratory of Visual Physiology and the Department of Ophthalmology / Medical Genetics, NHO Tokyo Medical Center (TMC). He is also affiliated with the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London, in association with Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK.
For over 20 years, his clinical and research activities have focused on inherited retinal dystrophies (IRD). His work encompasses detailed clinical phenotyping, electrophysiological assessment, molecular genetic analysis, and genotype-phenotype correlation, with the aim of advancing disease understanding and supporting precision medicine. He has also contributed to the clinical translation of these insights through the introduction of novel therapeutic strategies.
At TMC, he has played a leading role in the development of advanced clinical trials for IRD. In 2020, the team initiated the first gene supplementation trial for RPE65-retinopathy in Asia, which achieved regulatory approval in 2023. TMC is now certified as a Luxturna® administration institute, where clinical experience and real-world evidence are being accumulated. He has also been involved in a gene supplementation trial for RPGR-retinopathy since 2022, and, since 2024, in an oral pharmacological trial for Stargardt disease, continuing to advance therapeutic development for IRD.

Dr. Hashimoto is currently an Associate Professor and Chief Retina Surgeon at Toho University. As a retina specialist, his clinical practice focuses on advanced vitreoretinal surgeries, specifically managing complex cases such as severe PDR, PVR, and FEVR.
In addition to his clinical work, He serves as the Chair of the Japan Young Ophthalmologists Committee, where he has established various programs to encourage and support the next generation of ophthalmologists. His research background includes a fellowship at the University of Iowa, supported by the prestigious Alcon Japan Hida Memorial Award and Overseas Research Fellowship in 2018. During this time, he conducted research on chorioretinal blood flow with Dr. Sohan Hayreh and Dr. Randy Kardon.
In recognition of his significant contributions to the field, Dr. Hashimoto received both the Bayer Retina Award and the Young Investigator Award from the Japanese Society for Ocular Circulation in 2018, followed by the Tano Young Investigator's Award in 2025.

Dr Satoru Kase has shown an impressive commitment and enthusiasm in ophthalmic pathology and ocular inflammation in basic science and intraocular and ocular adnexal tumors in clinical aspect. He graduated from pathology and got PhD degree in graduate school of medicine, Tottori University, Japan in 1999. He started working as an ophthalmologist in Hokkaido University Hospital after that. He worked as a research fellow in Doheny Eye Institute, Los Angeles, CA in USA from 2007. He underwent education under professor Stephen J Ryan, and professor Narsing A Rao guidance regarding retinal diseases, inflammation and ophthalmic pathology. Now he works on vitreoretinal surgeries and ocular tumors and doing translational researches combined with clinical examinations and pathology in Hokkaido University Hospital. He has expanded his knowledge experiences obtained from various leaders to pursuit further studies in Nara Medical University. He published over 200 articles in English journals, and wrote over 70 articles as a first author.

Akiko Maeda, MD, PhD, is Deputy Director of the Research Center at Kobe City Eye Hospital and a Visiting Professor at Ritsumeikan University and Case Western Reserve University. She graduated from Sapporo Medical University in 1996 and completed her PhD in Ophthalmology and Pathology in 2001. After postdoctoral training at the University of Washington and Case Western Reserve University, she served as faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology at Case Western Reserve University.
Since returning to Japan, she has led retinal degeneration research at the RIKEN Center and Kobe City Eye Hospital. She currently provides patient care in the inherited retinal degeneration (IRD) clinic while continuing translational research bridging gene and cell therapy toward clinical application.

Kyoko Ohno-Matsui is Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Ophthalmology at Institute of Science Tokyo. She is also the Chief of the Advanced Clinical Center for Myopia. Her research focuses on myopia, especially pathologic myopia. She established an international photographic classification of myopic maculopathy. As a method to visualize the shape of the entire globe in high myopes, she established a new technique ‘3D MRI of the eye’ and proposed a novel classification of staphyloma. She has authored or co-authored 423 manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals. She has been awarded The J. Donald Gass Medal at the Macula Society in 2022, the Jose Rizal Medal at Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology in 2023, and the Duke Elder Medal at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2025.

Ayana Suzumura, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Nagoya University Hospital. She graduated from Nagoya University School of Medicine in 2014 and began her ophthalmology residency at her alma mater in 2016. Concurrently, she initiated basic research on the mechanisms of diabetic retinal neuropathy and potential therapeutic approaches. In 2020, she completed her Ph.D. at Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine. Her research earned her the 15th Young Investigator Award from the Japanese Society of Ophthalmic Diabetology. She has been continuing her research on diabetic retinal neuronal damage. Her clinical focus is diabetic retinopathy and uveitis.

Masayo Takahashi is an ophthalmologist who completed her doctoral program (Visual Pathology) at the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University. She served as the leader of the Laboratory for Retinal Regeneration, RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research from 2006 to 2022, conducting groundbreaking clinical research using the world’s first induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells in 2014. Yohei Tomita, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Chorioretinal Biology at Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan. He completed his ophthalmology residency, vitreoretinal fellowship, and PhD in Medicine at Keio University, followed by postdoctoral and senior research appointments at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. His clinical and research interests focus on diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and retinopathy of prematurity, with particular emphasis on lipid metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction, and metabolomics-based biomarker discovery. Taku Wakabayashi, MD, PhD, is currently a vitreoretinal and cataract surgeon at Wakabayashi Eye Center in Ishikawa, Japan. He is also a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Kanazawa University, Visiting Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Aichi Medical University, and a Visiting researcher at the Department of Vascular Physiology at Kanazawa University. He received his MD from Kanazawa University, completed his Ophthalmology Residency, Vitreoretinal Fellowship, and PhD in vascular biology at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, where he later served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Wakabayashi also completed his post-doctoral fellowship at Mid Atlantic Retina, Wills Eye Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University, USA.
Dr. Wakabayashi has contributed over 180 original papers, editorials, and textbook chapters, with a focus on the surgical and medical treatments of vitreoretinal diseases, including high myopia-associated macular diseases, retinal detachment, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, trauma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, as well as research in vascular and stem cell biology.
He has received awards and recognitions including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Achievement Award, American Society of Retina Specialist (ASRS) Honor Award and Senior Honor Award, Best Young Investigators Award at the International Vascular Biology Meeting (IVBM), and Japanese Ophthalmological Society Young Investigators Award. He is an active member of the AAO, ASRS, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Retina Society, and Vit-Buckle Society.
